TypePad iPhone Application
I think everyone was surprised to hear that our very own Michael Sippey was on stage with Steve Jobs for the Apple Keynote announcing our native TypePad iPhone application. There was applause around the office when we heard the news.
MT 4.2 Schedule Updates
- We plan on releasing MT 4.2 RC2 this week.
- RC2 will be the first release in which we have fully tested and certified internally support for postgres on Movable Type 4.2. If you are postgres user, this is the 4.2 release for you!
- We do plan on shipping RC3, but we do not have a date. We feel strongly RC3 will be the last RC and thus we will base our decision to release RC3 upon the number of unresolved issues and the severity/priority of those issues.
Movable Type 4.2 Benchmarks
- We conducted benchmarks against an MT install with the following characteristics:
- 1 blog
- 10,000 entries
- 100,000 comments (exactly 10 comments per entry)
- 3 categories (with 3,333 entries per category)
- 3 authors (with 3,333 entries per author)
- We chose that data set as we felt it best represented a relatively large install and because we knew it would exhibit certain known performance problems with Movable Type.
- Users who have larger blogs should rest assured knowing that we feel strongly that the improvements seen in MT 4.2 are EQUALLY APPLICABLE to them.
Results
- Simply by upgrading from MT 4.1 to 4.2 and making no other changes to your system can yield publishing improvements of up to 33%. By turning on module caching for all widgets (with a 5 minute cache window) yielding publishing speed improvements of 45%.
- Movable Type 4.2 has been shown to be 2x faster than MT 3.x was out of the box. By turning on module caching it has been shown to be 3x faster.
- Search performance has been increase 100x in MT 4.2 over MT 3.x.
Q&A
- I was asked if I had heard in the ether of other software vendors, specifically companies like Red Sweater (makers of MarsEdit) are planning iPhone apps. I have not heard anything... yet.
- Dave Aiello mention his use of the Hemingway theme for MT and noted how flexible it is and easily one can customize it.
- Dave Aiello also mentioned that he found the Learning Movable Type article on customizing themes in MT4 to be very helpful. We reviewed on the call the contents of this article.
- We are working hard on the MT on scoping the next release and we want to do whatever we can to make the process of design and the process of upgrading your designs easier. If you have ideas or would like to give us feedback, please use the movable type forums.
